Frequently Asked Questions

Does Lighthouse provide transport?

Yes, Lighthouse helps coordinate paid transport to school as a service to its families. The school selects qualified drivers to provide this service, but the drivers are not employees of the school. Any family interested in transport should let the Administration Team know and we will be happy to confirm whether your part of the island is serviced by the drivers we work with. If it is, the relevant driver will be notified and arrangements made. Places will be accorded on a first-come, first-served basis and students are not necessarily guaranteed a seat. Please note that children in Reception are too young to take the transport service provided by Lighthouse unless they are accompanied by an older sibling.

Do Lighthouse students wear uniforms?

Yes, Lighthouse students in Grades 1-13 must wear the school uniform at school and on field excursions. These are designed to be comfortable, practical, attractive and affordable. Children in our Reception classes are to be appropriately clothed in regular clothes and not the school uniform. Footwear should be closed toe and appropriate for running around.

When does Lighthouse admit new students?

We admit new students on an ongoing basis throughout the academic year. Although joining a new school at the beginning of an academic year is preferrable, we welcome new students whenever we have an open seat.

Do you admit students to Lighthouse on a short-term basis?

Yes, we know that some people come to Mauritius for a few months and want their child to experience a new school and make friends. We love to welcome exchange students and those who are here for a short time and appreciate the unique world-experiences these students and their families bring. However, this is subject to space in our classes and familiarity with the English language.

How many students are in each class?

We limit the number of students to 24 per class. In the primary school, reception and lower primary classes have the additional support of a Learning Assistant. Upper primary classes have shared Learning Assistant support.

What if my child does not speak English?

Depending on your child’s age and grade they are seeking admission for, this may not be a problem. Please contact us so that we can meet you and your child, assess their proficiency in English and advise accordingly.

What Grade Level?

When considering which grade a child will enter, it is important to consider two key questions:

  1. Where will the student flourish in their relationships?
A good fit socially and emotionally is extremely important as we want all children to develop long-lasting and meaningful friendships with their classmates. This is central to their happiness and well-being at school.
  2. Where will the student flourish in their learning?
Although our classes are differentiated to meet a wide variety of needs, we want to find the ‘best fit’ for each student so that we can provide the correct level of challenge.
