Why do we use Chromebooks?

Author: Dylan Langheim, EdTech Lead

At Lighthouse, our goal is not to put a screen in every student’s hand just for the sake of it. We want to build a learning environment where technology supports teaching, encourages creativity, and helps students grow into responsible digital citizens.

That’s why we’ve chosen Chromebooks as our school’s learning device, and here’s why we believe it’s the right choice for our community.

One device, one experience
Teachers are the heart of learning. When all students use the same device, it becomes easier for teachers to plan, teach, and troubleshoot. For us this limits waste time solving device problems in the classroom, and that means more time spent on actual learning.

As we are already a Google Workspace school this uniform approach helps students too. They gain confidence using a familiar device and set of productivity tools every day, across subjects.

Tech as a tool
Our Chromebooks come with touchscreens and styluses.

Students can:

  • Sketch ideas in Design or Art
  • Annotate documents in English
  • Solve Maths problems by hand
  • Label diagrams in Science
  • Take handwritten notes if they prefer
  • Film a video about the parts of a plant
  • Scan a plant in our forest to identify it

Access, not distractions
Because Chromebooks support Android apps, students can use exciting learning tools like the Plant Identifier app in Forest School. These apps turn outdoor and offline experiences into digital learning moments.

At the same time, the devices are managed by Lighthouse, so students can’t install games or access content that doesn’t belong in school. We believe it is our responsibility to reduce distractions and protect their wellbeing.

Managed for learning at school and at home
Perhaps the biggest advantage is that these devices are fully managed by our school’s IT team.

From 7:30 to 15:00 on school days, Chromebooks:

  • Only work with a Lighthouse account
  • Block inappropriate websites and YouTube content
  • Prevent incognito browsing
  • Allow only pre-approved apps and extensions
  • Keep track of student activity for safety and accountability

Even at home, the device remains connected to our safe learning environment if students sign in with their school account. This level of control helps us keep the focus where it belongs: on teaching and learning.

Safe, secure, and supported
Every Chromebook comes with a 3-year warranty, and our IT team is ready to help if something goes wrong. We have a small bank of spare Chromebooks so if a device is out for repair our students sign in and pick right up where they left off within minutes.

By choosing Chromebooks, we are taking a thoughtful and fair approach to technology at school.

We want to prepare students to use technology wisely, creatively, and responsibly. We also want to make sure that every student, no matter their background, has access to the same powerful tools for learning.
